All through Monday night, Democrats begged for just one more Republican Senator to vote against Secretary of Education Nominee Betsy DeVos. To their disappointment, the Democrats’ pleas remained unanswered as Vice President Mike Pence made history today in casting the tie-breaking vote to confirm DeVos this morning, according to Tom LoBianco and Ted Barrett on CNN.com.
This comes as a major win for the Trump administration, as DeVos was their most contested nominee. Those opposed to DeVos, though, are not taking her official appointment lightly.
Today on Politico.com, Kimberly Hefling and Michael Stratford wrote that the anti-DeVos crowd plans “to make her job hell.” With concern for her support of charter schools and doubts over her confirmation hearing, DeVos’s opponents are ready to scrutinize her every move.
In the wake of the rift left by her nomination, DeVos will have to spend her first few months in office making amends and finding ways to work with those against her. Republicans and Democrats must unite to overcome their nasty divide and elevate education for all students.
