The push for school choice in Texas escalated this week with Senator Ted Cruz’s letter to Texas Legislators.
Cruz’s letter urged lawmakers “to make Texas the next state that gives parents taxpayer dollars to send their children to private or religious schools, or educate them at home,” Patrick Svitek wrote in the Texas Tribune on March 9, 2017.
Using public funds to finance private institutions contradicts itself. As former Dallas ISD board president Ken Zornes said in an article for the Dallas News on February 3, people “who care about public education in Texas and how [their] tax dollars are being spent should be very alarmed…”
Directing public tax dollars to private schools removes any trace of accountability in funding education. Tax payers deserve to know where their money goes and how it is used, a principle undermined by school choice.
